Summer Activities

Why not visit in the summer and enjoy warm days and the midnight sun?

Be as active as you want or just enjoy the peace and tranquility of the National Park

WALKING
Walking trails start in the village. With a car you can explore many more hiking areas

The Kellokas Visitor Centre 3km outside Akaslompolo on the road to the fell has a cafe/restaurant, museum,provides hiking information, sells maps and guidebooks
Waymarked nature trails of all lengths start from here
Longer hiking trips can be undertaken, staying in wilderness huts or camping

The Yllas Nordic Walking Park provides over 100km (11 trails) of signposted walking trails, with starting points in Akaslompolo and Yllasjarvi villages. These are colourcoded for length and difficulty and generally follow the routes of winter crosscountry ski trails

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CYCLING
Mountain bikes can be hired locally and local activity companies also run guided cycling trips. At the Trek Bike Park there is a 3km downhill track as well as the more gentle road down the fell. The  gondola  runs in the summer, offering an easy way to the top of Yllastunturi-cycle or walk back down. Buy a map of the local cycle routes from the Tourist Information Centre to help plan your trips.

 

 

 

 

 

CANOEING/KAYAKING/BOATING
Equipment can be hired locally. Take a trip on the local lake or venture further afield and explore the Muonio river which forms the border between Sweden and Finland. Outfitters run guided trips or rent your equipment from them and spend a night or 2 canoe-camping

SWIMMING
Swim in the lake which has a bathing beach
There are also 2 indoor swimming pools, at AkasHotelli in the village and at Yllasjarvi. Both are open to non-residents

ORIENTEERING
The fells and forests around Yllas are ideal for orienteering and running. Buy a map from the Kellokas Visitor centre- there are several training maps available (all at a scale of 1:15000)

FISHING
A very popular pastime-trout, grayling, Arctic char and salmon fishing. Rent your equipment locally. You can obtain a permit from the National Park Visitor Centre. Local lake and river fishing information.

HORSE RIDING
Icelandic horse riding excursions to explore the beautiful local scenery. Group or private trips are possible

SPA
Enjoy a day of indulgence in the spa centre at the Hotel Yllas Saaga in Yllasjarvi

BERRY & MUSHROOM PICKING
In late summer, take a gentle stroll, picking cloudberries, blueberries and wild mushrooms

RUSKA 
In early September, the leaves of the trees turn  beautiful reds and browns of autumn. This is a favourite time of year for many Finns to visit
